SUMMARY:Conservation of Historic Wallpaper at Strokestown Park House.
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin our Curator Ciara Mc Cormac as part of National Heritage Week for a talk about the many risks faced by our historic built environment. \nThe wallpaper in the Library\, Dining Room and two of the smaller private rooms on the first floor will be cared for by wallpaper expert David Skinner and his team. \nAccording to the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum)\, historic wallpaper is not simply decorative – it is a ‘record of technological ingenuity and changes in patterns of consumption and domestic taste’. The wallpaper at Strokestown clearly illustrates this development\, from the bespoke design of the 1820s\, to the machine printed off-the-shelf patterns of only 100 years later. \nWithout on-going monitoring\, and conservation\, we risk losing this sometimes underappreciated evidence of the past. This Heritage Week we invite visitors to come along to a talk and short tour which will explore the development of wallpaper and bring you through the house to see a selection of our wallpaper\, during various stages of the conservation work. \nRegister on arrival at the main Strokestown Park Visitor Centre Reception\, from here you will be guided to the Vaulted Stables\, Event Space. \nThere is an small admission fee for this talk\, with all proceeds going directly towards the on-going care of Strokestown Park. \nLimited spaces available\, advanced booking required. \n**Free for Irish Heritage Trust members. Advance booking required: email events@strokestownpark.ie. Valid membership card and photo ID required at check-in.** \n**This event is partly wheelchair accessible\, however\, a small portion of the tour takes place on the first floor of Strokestown Park House.** \nThis project has been kindly funded by the Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grant scheme. \n\n \n
