SUMMARY:The Potato People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:FINAL CHANCE TO SEE THESE REMARKABLE SCULPTURES AT STROKESTOWN PARK – EXHIBITION ENDS THIS SUNDAY AUGUST 27th. \nStep into a captivating world of history and art at The National Famine Museum\, as we proudly present Joe McCaul’s extraordinary sculpture exhibition titled “The Potato People.” Located within the magnificent vaulted stables this unique display promises a moving experience like no other. \nThis thought-provoking show runs between June 28th to August 27th. It is free to Irish Heritage Trust members and all visitors who purchase tickets to our Museum. \n“The Potato People” exhibition draws inspiration from poignant accounts of the Irish Famine\, particularly the book “The Truth Behind the Famine” by Jerry Mulvihill\, copies of which are available at the Strokestown Park shop. This book resonated deeply with Joe and compelled him to find a meaningful way to honor the millions who perished from hunger\, disease\, and forced emigration during this dark chapter of history. \nThrough these stories of the Famine\, Joe connects us with the individuals whose lives were tragically affected. Joe has given each sculpture a name and background story. This enriching addition enhances the experience\, enabling visitors to connect more intimately with the artworks and grasp the historical significance they represent. \nDon’t miss this extraordinary exhibition this summer\, that combines artistry\, history\, and heartfelt storytelling and join us as we pay homage to the lives lost and the resilience of those who endured An Gorta Mór. \nFull events calendar available here. \n

SUMMARY:Heritage Week - Show and Tell with our Walled Garden Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:  \nDuring Heritage Week\, our Walled Garden’s Volunteers will be onsite every day to welcome curious visitors into their little piece of heaven. Working alongside our full-time gardener this team of 20 volunteers freely give of their time to maintain Strokestown Park’s Gardens. An important element of what our volunteers do is the continuation of food production in the kitchen garden – a practice that has been taking place within the walls for nearly 300 years. \nOld cultivating methods and hand tools are used\, with no automation. Crops include wheat\, oats\, berries\, currants\, apples\, pears\, squash\, courgettes\, onions\, parsnips\, beetroot\, and tomatoes. While hundreds of years old\, many of the fruit trees are still producing. The Walled Gardens at Strokestown Park House were originally created in 1740\, as one large vegetable garden. Now\, the 6 acres comprise a Pleasure Garden\, as well as a Vegetable Garden\, 3 glass houses\, and an Exhibition Space containing garden tools once used by the garden staff. We welcome conversation and contribution\, and exchange of ideas and interests. \nAccess to the Gardens is included in any general admission ticket and is free to Irish Heritage Trust members. \nOther Heritage Week events here  \nSupported by The Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2023

SUMMARY:Judging Famine Follies
DESCRIPTION:  \nOctober 22nd at 3:30 pm in the Vaulted Stables. \nJudging Famine Follies is a new\, free play that explores how Irish historic houses and heritage sites were created and shaped during the period of the Great Hunger. Ireland’s landlords have been widely vilified for failing to feed their starving tenants\, yet monuments to their benevolence adorn the Irish landscape. Judging Famine Follies summons them from beyond the grave and invites the audience to decide which of their monuments are merited. Lord Londonderry is defended by Major Mahon of Stroketown\, the first landlord to be assassinated during the Great Famine. Witnesses from history\, with their own foibles and follies\, including Lady Londonderry\, Lord Brownlow and Lord Dufferin are called. The audience is the jury. \n

SUMMARY:Percy’s Party with County Leitrim Percy French Society
DESCRIPTION:  \nWednesday 1st May 2024\, 7.30 pm \nBook Tickets here\nPercy French – born 1st May 1854\, Clooneyquinn\, Co Roscommon. \n170 years after his birth\, barely a sing-song takes place in this country that doesn’t feature at least a couple of Percy French songs. Who doesn’t know the famous opening line ‘Oh Mary this London’s a wonderful sight’\, the beautiful ballad of ‘Come Back Paddy Reilly’ or the rousing ‘Phil the Fluter’s Ball’. Perhaps not everyone can identify the composer of these famous Irish folk songs but most will recognise the lyrics and the melodies. \nTish Dunleavy and Frank Cadam founded the County Leitrim Percy French Society as they realised that\, despite his extensive musical repertoire\, French was under-appreciated and under-promoted. \nThe society has performed in theatres all across the country\, including two sell-out shows in the National Concert Hall They also featured on the BBC’s Britain’s Great Railway Journeys\, This charming show will now be performed in the Woodland Cafe at Strokestown Park House to celebrate the 170th Birthday of Percy French.\nThe show is performed by 9 members of the County Leitrim Percy French Society in period costume with Frank Cadam taking the role of the great man himself. \nSongs are linked with stories from the life of Percy French explaining the background and inspiration behind the music\, giving the show a warmth and authenticity. \nThe show is under the direction of Tish Dunleavy as musical director. The show is presented in a fun-loving and good-humored way with audience participation welcomed and encouraged along the way. \nThis event is funded by Roscommon County Council under the Creative Ireland Programme\, in collaboration with the National Famine Museum\, Strokestown Park. \nMore events at Strokestown Park here
