National Famine Museum As Gaeilge
March 8

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge on Sunday March 8th, there will be FREE access to the National Famine Museum
with an Irish language audio guide.
The Great Famine (1845–1852) was a catastrophic turning point for the Irish language, accelerating its decline from a majority tongue to a minority language. As the Famine disproportionately affected the rural, Irish-speaking poor in the west and south, at least 1.5 million speakers died or emigrated in a decade, decimating the language’s core population.
We are proud that our museum is bilingual and offers the option of a Irish language audio guide.
Advanced booking is not required.
Other events taking place on the day include:
Comhrá, Caifé agus Ceol in our Woodland Café from 2pm to 4pm.
Strokestown House Tour, 1pm, €5 per person. Advanced booking is required.
